Visiting the Spirit Tree

The point on which the tree grows is private, sacred ground owned by the Grand Portage Band. Since 1989 the site has been closed to general public access.

Please honor these guidelines

The closure protects both the fragile cedar and the sanctity of the place.

  • Do not hike to the tree without a member of the Grand Portage Band.
  • Do not climb on, touch, or take cuttings from the tree.
  • View and photograph respectfully, ideally from the water and at a distance.
  • Leave no trash; take only memories.
  • When in doubt, ask the Grand Portage Band office for current guidance.
